A Remarkable Bird is the...

There certainly are lots of bird blogs. And tons of styles. Some good. Some not.

But they all have two things in common. They’re not like mine. And they have lots of readers.

Hmmm.

Makes me think maybe it’s time to tinker with my style.

 Guess I’ll take a crack at poetic. Why not? I have a sensitive nature. And you know I have a way with words. Well. A few of them anyway. So here we go.

The marvelous Black Skimmer

A remarkable bird is the  Skimmer.

He can catch fish though not much of a swimmer.

His lower jaw juts as the upper one shuts

On a herring he swallows for dinner. :)

American Tree Sparrow

I promised you some facts about this handsome bird:

• It nests on the ground.
• It forages on the ground.
• It perches a few feet above the ground in bushes.
• It seldom uses trees at all.
• So why Tree Sparrow? It was named by immigrants--obviously more homesick than observant--after the European Tree Sparrow.
• They are monogamous. Unusual for small birds.
• Females sit on the nest. Males help feed the babies
• They watch for danger with just their left eye. Honest.

Odd fact, but it might explain one thing. While the female is stuck on the nest she uses her left eye to stay safe. That leaves the right for other things. Like watching the male chase around after insects.This may sound cynical. Research shows males are strictly loyal. But maybe--now I'm just saying maybe. It’s that right eye that helps keep everything that way? : )

 

Distinguishing Marks: Gray breast with a dot is unique. Bill orange on the bottom dark gray on top. Red-brown eyeline.

I’m trying something new. I’ve linked a blog written by a student named Heidi Ware. Sort of a guest blog. Except she doesn’t know it. The reason I’m doing it is someone asked me, “How can the Yellow-breasted Chat throw its voice?” I told him it has to do with different frequencies carrying farther.  True.  But lame.

Then I found a real explanation. A killer explanation. A little technical. Well a lot technical. But worth it. It’s good. Really good.

But after all, what else would you expect from Heidi?  : )
