It’s cold here. Stupid cold. The “feels like” temperature as they say here in the Midwest is -13. But out of the wind it’s a balmy 1. So just for fun, I dragged the family out birding New Year’s Eve. We didn’t expect to find too many birds in this weather. We didn’t. Just one.
But a big one.
That evening I asked my ten year old grandson what I should write in my blog. Without hesitating he said:
“I [he’s talking as if he’s me here] -- I took the whole family birding but we didn’t see squat. Until my son-in-law [that would be my son-in-law of course] saw a bird in a tree. He was waving like crazy [my son-in-law not the bird] for us to come over where he was. He pointed at a bird. A big bird. A real big bird. Then my grandsons [that would be my grandsons :) ] walked closer with me. We got pretty close. It was cool. We got to see an Eagle and a movie today.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself. : )
Distinguishing Marks: If you have to wonder if it's a hawk or an eagle it's a hawk. When it's an Eagle you'll know. Huge.
Boring facts: Their nests are big too. Most are four to five feet across and a couple feet deep. The largest on record according to the National Eagle Center was "9.5 feet in diameter, 20 feet deep and weighed almost 3 tons."
